Ryan Ricker: Thank You Gravity Skateboards
Ryan Ricker is parting ways with Gravity Skateboards for some new opportunities, but can’t leave without paying respect to the company and people that have helped get him to these opportunities. One of the many reasons why I have a lot of respect for Ricker is because he gives so much respect and cares about integrity, something often lost on many people these days. We’ll be announcing Ricker’s new moves soon, but for now, Ryan has sent us this open letter and a bunch of photos for one last farewell to the brand that has stood behind him for so long. Take note, this is how you do things right.
After many outstanding years of riding with Gravity Skateboards, I will be moving on this year in a new direction.
When I originally moved to San Diego, it was completely spontaneous. Randomly I was on a road trip passing through and just never ended up leaving. I quickly found a job, and acquired a great place to live; everything fell into place, so I had to stay. As I began settling into SD, I cruised the streets, hit local spots and parks, and went to skate events in the area. Gradually I built connections within the community and with people entwined in the skate scene.
Because I knew Kevin [Kennedy] at Gravity through my years of working in skate shops in New Mexico (Beyond Waves and Skate School Santa Fe), I was welcomed with open arms when I stumbled into the Gravity Skateboards headquarters one day. After getting more established a year or so later, I began riding with them becoming further rooted in the San Diego community.
Over the years it has been a pleasure working with such a legendary brand. Together, we developed a downhill segment and brought Gravity back into the racing scene. From there I was given the freedom to design my own board, the “Slick Ricker.” A board that I’ve always wanted with graphics to match, it has been rad to see it to come to life —I couldn’t be happier with it. Since then, I’ve also had a hand in designing a double kick, all around board, the “Rook” complimenting the skate everything attitude I appreciate.
With the amazing support from Gravity, I have also had the opportunity to travel to a ton of events, meet new riders and racers from all over the world, and experience a great deal of incredible things that I’m thankful for. I would also like to express my gratitude to all of my teammates who have had my back over the years: It’s been a pleasure riding with you guys.
I will always cherish my time spent with Gravity. The experiences I have gained riding with them are countless and I cannot thank them enough. I am thrilled to have been a part of such a trusted, respected and iconic brand. Keep rollin’ and enjoy the ride.
