Throwback Thursdays: Rasta Resort with LY and SL,UTs
This TBT is from September 2014, when I was traveling with the Landyachtz crew from Colorado to California, in between two of the gnarliest races of their time: Pikes Peak and Angie’s Curves. Along the way was a detour in Utah to skate a couple peaks with some friends from Salt Lake City, Utah (SL,UTs).
In the van on this trip was Andrew Chapman, Elena Corrigall, Charlie Darragh, Alex Hannigan, Katie Nielson, Riley Harris, Dillon Stephens, and myself. Swedish longboarder and all-around skilled gamer Adam Persson caught a ride with us in Colorado and road with us down to California as well. The SL,UT crew was composed of Micah Green, Riley Irvine, Conner Wagner, and Tommmy Watson. The SL,UTs, also heading down to Angie’s Curves for the next race, knew of a sorta secret spot called the Rasta Resort where we could camp and skate all by ourselves and offered to show us the sweet spot. So, the Landyachtz crew and I happily accepted their gracious offer and we all camped at the supposed “resort.” Aussie Connor Ferguson and his mom were there too.
The night we arrived, the SL’UTs were really excited to show us the view. So while some chose to go right to bed, some of us went up to the top to check it out. Andrew Chapman and I took some long exposure pictures for fun.
The next day, we shuttled a few runs. The road has got a sweet roller-coaster drop to start off the run and you accelerate quickly. Potholes and boulders are real dangers to watch out for. There are a few hairpins and one sweet dropping left where you can take a line that a follow car could not trace. The unique features, high speed, and seclusion give this “resort” a five star rating for sure.
After enough runs to kill a few wheels, we decided to head out and parted ways with the SL,UTs. We planned to stay with Vegas Mike in Las Vegas and wanted to get there around sun down. We made one final stop in the evening to “get out all of our energy” before driving into Vegas. We pulled off the highway and drove up some random dirt road to find a spot to hang out for a while. I cherish the secluded times on this desert hill with good friends.
Thanks to Landyachtz for letting me ride with the crew that year and thanks to the SL,UT crew for hosting us on a fun hill. See you next Thursday for another Throwback.
